This report provides an overview of the CDM potential and activity in the SADC countries.
While the CDM has grown to a multi-billion dollar financing source for clean energy projects in the last decade, Africa has not so far benefitted significantly from this mechanism. Within SADC there are only a handful of projects under development outside of the South Africa. Yet, a number of research and capacity building programmes in the region point to significant potential for CDM projects in the SADC energy sector.

Global investments in renewable power generation have exploded over the recent years, and were in 2008 for the first time larger than investments in fossil-fuel technologies. Renewable technologies including large hydro accounted for around 41 percent of new power sector capacity in 2008.
